Pesto alla genovese is a sauce originating from Genoa in the north italian region Liguria. The name comes from the italian word "pestare" which means "to pound" or "to crush". The souce is composed of crushed herbs and garlic mixed with salt, olive oil, Parmesan cheese and roasted pine nuts.
